SEO has accumulated more folklore than almost any other marketing discipline. Much of what business owners are told is either years out of date or was never true. This article covers what actually determines whether you rank, in the order those factors matter, and what has genuinely changed now that AI assistants sit between many buyers and the results page.

The Three Things Ranking Actually Depends On

Can Google find and index the page? This is binary and nothing else matters until it is true. Pages blocked by robots rules, pages with no internal links pointing at them, pages whose content only appears via JavaScript, and pages Google indexed months ago and has not revisited all fail here.

Is the page the best available answer? Not "does it mention the keyword" — does it answer the question more completely and more credibly than the pages currently ranking. This is where most sites lose, and it is not fixable with technical work.

Does the site have enough authority to be trusted with the query? Competitive commercial terms go to sites with established authority, largely built through links and consistent quality. This is the slowest of the three and cannot be shortcut safely.

Everything else — meta tags, schema, speed, headings — is real but secondary. It shapes how well you compete once those three are handled; it does not substitute for any of them.

Search Intent Decides Everything Upstream

The most common expensive mistake is targeting a keyword without matching what the searcher wants.

Someone searching "what is answer engine optimization" wants an explanation. Someone searching "AEO agency" wants to hire. If you point a service page at the first query, you will not rank — and if you did, the traffic would not convert. Look at what currently ranks for a term before writing for it. Google has already told you what it thinks the query means.

The corollary is that low-volume, high-intent keywords usually outperform high-volume generic ones for a small business. Fewer people search "commercial security installation Kelowna" than "security," but the ones who do are buying.

Titles and Descriptions Are Your Click-Through Lever

Keep title tags under roughly 60 characters and meta descriptions under roughly 155 so Google displays them in full. Titles carry ranking weight; descriptions mostly do not, but they heavily influence whether anyone clicks.

The highest-return SEO task most sites never do: open Search Console, sort your pages by impressions, and find the ones with many impressions and almost no clicks. Google is already showing those pages — the title and description are failing to earn the click. Rewriting them changes results faster than almost anything else, because you are improving pages that already rank.

Content Depth, Honestly Defined

"Longer ranks better" is a misreading. Depth wins because thorough answers tend to be longer, not because length itself is rewarded. A padded 2,000-word article loses to a complete 800-word one.

The test is whether a reader finishes with unanswered follow-up questions. If your article on pricing does not address what drives the number, what is excluded, and how to compare quotes, it is incomplete regardless of word count — and a competitor covering those will outrank it.

"Write until the question is answered. Then stop. Both halves matter."

Links: What Works and What Is Dangerous

Links from other sites remain a major authority signal, which is why an industry exists to sell them. Buying links violates Google's spam policies and risks manual action — the downside is asymmetric and not worth it.

What works for a small business is unglamorous: clients and suppliers who will credit you, local publications and industry blogs that compile roundups, professional bodies and directories relevant to your field, and genuinely useful free resources that people cite because they are useful. The last is the only one that scales without ongoing effort.

Local Search Is a Separate Discipline

If you serve a geographic area, the local pack operates on different signals from ordinary results: profile completeness and activity, proximity, review volume and recency, and consistent name-address-phone details across the web.

This is why a national SEO strategy often produces nothing for a local business, and why a complete Google Business Profile with steady genuine reviews frequently beats a better website. Our local SEO checklist walks the specifics.

AEO: What Changed

Answer Engine Optimization is the newer half of this discipline. When a buyer asks an assistant for a recommendation, they get two or three names rather than ten links — so inclusion matters more and exclusion costs more.

Two things follow. Write answer-first, so a direct sentence exists to be quoted. And build presence on third-party sources, because assistants read directories, reviews and roundups at least as much as they read your site. Our AEO checklist covers the technical side.

Realistic Timelines

SEO is slow because two of its three pillars are slow. New pages must be crawled and assessed; authority accumulates gradually. Expect movement in months, and expect average position to improve before clicks do — a page moving from position 40 to 15 earns almost nothing, then earns a great deal moving from 15 to 5.

Anyone guaranteeing rankings or promising fast results on competitive terms is either misinformed or planning something that carries risk. If you want the work done properly, that is our SEO / AEO service.
